Gwenllian Gravelle
After a successful and long standing career at the BBC, producing high- end, award -winning dramas such as KEEPING FAITH (Un Bore Mercher); Gwenllian Gravelle is Head of Film and Drama at the Welsh-language broadcaster S4C.
Building on the recent renaissance of Welsh drama and the S4C led invention of Celtic noir, Gwenllian is focused on commissioning original drama that not only has a local feel but also a global world-class appeal. Her most recent commission was a compelling 6-part psychological thriller starring Joanna Scanlan, Alex Roach and Iwan Rheon. Y GOLAU (The Light in the Hall) was S4C’s first co-pro with Channel 4/APC and Sundance NOW and Channel 4’s most watched drama in 2022. Her recent commission DAL Y MELLT (Rough Cut) was the first- ever Welsh language drama to be streamed on Netflix, proving that there is an appetite for exciting quality drama regardless of language.
Two brand new crime dramas will be airing on the channel this Autumn; CLEDDAU (The One that got away) is a co-production with BANIJAY (staring Elen Rhys and Richard Harrington and written by Cath Tregenna) and AR Y FFIN (Mudtown), the first co-pro with UKTV (staring Erin Richards and Tom Cullen).
Gwenllian is also leading the recently announced S4C cinema fund for Welsh language features Sinema Cymru, in association with Welsh Government and Ffilm Cymru and developing the first every Welsh-language Interactive Film with Wales Interactive.
